How Often Should I Change My Oil?

It was once common knowledge that vehicles should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles. Today, due to advancements in technology, most experts recommend every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. But what about exotic and collectible cars? If you are a collectible car owner and have been wondering, “How often should I change my oil?” read on to find out more.

Vintage Cars

Most vintage cars are not daily drivers but brought out for specials occasions, shows, or a cruise through the states. According to Hagerty.com, “the average vintage car or truck typically travels fewer than 1,500 miles per year.” Because of this we recommend forgoing the typical mileage consideration when planning your oil changes and instead focus on how long the oil has been in your vehicle.

Due to dirt, contaminants, and residual gas, oil can break down if it sits in a vintage vehicle for a period of time. So most experts agree that a vintage vehicle should receive an oil change every 6 to 12 months depending on how frequently it is driven.

Exotic Cars

Due to the high-performance nature of many supercar exotic vehicles, oil changes can vary drastically and you will want to consult your owner’s manual or the manufacturer exact information pertaining to your specific model. For exotic cars, you don’t want to go very long without proper service, especially oil changes. Do not exceed 5,000 miles before servicing.

In addition to the varying intervals, models with midship placement, like the Ferrari 360, can require underbody panels or other body parts to be removed. This is because many performance vehicles have multiple engine oil plugs or filters that need to be accessed. Due to the complexity that can go into these oil changes, we recommend you seek out a seasoned, certified garage that specializes in your make to ensure they have the equipment and skills necessary to do the job.

Types of Oil

Ensuring you use the proper type of oil is crucial to keeping your vintage or exotic car on the roadways of the country as long as possible. When picking an oil for your vehicle you want to keep in mind that:

  • Exotic Vehicles: A specialty oil may be needed to ensure the best performance for its advanced engine. Consult your owner’s manual or the manufacturer to select the appropriate oil.
  • Vintage Cars: Older models may have been designed when additives including ZDDP were present in the oil. These cars can experience problems with modern oil that has been stripped of this additive. This causes some classic car owners to rebuild their engines, but for a less expensive and involved option you can also add ZDDP to your oil. Make sure you research the proper ratio for your vehicle to avoid damage that can come with too little or too much ZDDP
